Emergency Info

In the event of a local emergency, information for our local residents is essential to assist them through any critical event. This section of our municipal website will be the source of that information. We currently have four other publicly available resources that residents can use for important emergency information in the event access to our police dispatcher is not available. These sources are:

What you Need to Know When the Power Goes Out Unexpectedly (updated 11/25/13)

Highlights

  • To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, use generators, pressure washers, grills, and similar items outdoors only.
  • If the power is out longer than two hours, throw away food that has a temperature higher than 40°F.
  • Check with local authorities to be sure your water is safe.
  • In hot weather, stay cool and drink plenty of fluids to prevent heat-related illness.
  • In cold weather, wear layers of clothing, which help to keep in body heat.
  • Avoid power lines and use electric tools and appliances safely to prevent electrical shock.

Be Prepared for an Emergency

The CDC recommends that people make an emergency plan that includes a disaster supply kit. This kit should include enough water, dried and canned food, and emergency supplies (flashlights, batteries, first-aid supplies, prescription medicines, and a digital thermometer) to last at least 3 days. Use battery-powered flashlights and lanterns, rather than candles, gas lanterns, or torches (to minimize the risk of fire).

You can find more information on emergency plans and supply kits in the Emergency Preparedness and You section of our site on the CDC website.
